With this in mind, Heritage Inc. now has a policy that requires my personal approval on anything that goes to any media outlet.

[Part 7]

BEANS FEND OFF BUGS A team of Japanese and German researchers has found that lima bean plants can repel attacking insects such as two-spotted spider mites by producing an unpleasant odor, and can induce neighboring plants to produce the same odor. In an experiment, the researchers placed two lima bean plants infested with 100 spider mites into a container near several uninfected plants. Within a day, the infected plants had released four major chemical compounds known as herbivore-induced terpenoids. These foul-smelling airborne chemical signals triggered a release of the same compounds by the uninfected plants. The uninfected plants remained mite-free for several days, and although mites did eventually attack them, the infestation was only slight.

What did researchers discover concerning lima bean plants? (정답 : B )

(a) Their seeds are spread by certain insects.
(b) They warn their neighbors of insect attacks.
(c) Their leaves contain chemicals that attract insects.
(d) They are the preferred food of two-spotted spider mites.

[Part 7]
SLEEPING ON THE JOB Americans today get less sleep than they did a century ago. In 1900, the average American slept 8.5 hours a night. Today, according to a recent poll, that figure has dropped to 6.5 hours. The National Sleep Center (NSC) estimates that drowsy workers cost U.S. businesses $18 billion a year in missed workdays and lower productivity. Fatigued drivers are thought to cause up to 100,000 highway accidents annually. To combat the problem of sleepy workers, a small number of companies have instituted nap policies, and have even set up nap rooms for workers. According to researchers at the NSC, a 15-minute nap is enough to recharge a person's batteries for the next three or four hours. "I think it's fair to say that napping is an essential biological need. It's one of the pillars of good health," says Dr. Jane Serby, director of research at the NSC. "I hope that businesses continue to recognize that a 15-minute nap can play a vital role in increasing a worker's productivity and overall health. It should be encouraged," said Dr. Serby.

What did a poll find regarding sleeping habits? (정답 : B )
(a) Many Americans go to bed after midnight.
(b) Most Americans get 6.5 hours each night.
(c) Half of Americans report having problems getting to sleep.
(d) A majority of Americans say they sleep more on weekends.
